Your children may struggle with divorce: You can help

Going through a divorce is hard enough for parents, but for children, it can seem like the end of the world. Your children will survive this divorce, but it's up to you as a parent to ensure they not only get through it but thrive while doing so.

During your divorce, it's important to develop healthy parent-child relationships. Unless there is a reason not to, it's important to make sure your children have time with his or her other parent and that they have positive interactions with him or her. Children who grow up with the support of both parents have more than one person to turn to in times of trouble or concerns, and that's something that can make your kids feel much more comfortable with the situation.

In the long term, children who go through divorce may struggle with anxiety or depression. It's very important to monitor your children's well-being throughout the process of divorce.

Children who witness their parents fighting, becoming violent or disparaging each other could suffer more severe mental health consequences than those who are in supportive environments throughout the divorce.

How can you tell if your child is struggling? Common signs of anxiety and depression include:

  • Self-harming behaviors
  • Trouble at school
  • Drug and alcohol abuse

Your children's lives have been turned upside down by your decision to get a divorce. It's important to take extra time to be a part of their lives and to talk to them about how they feel. Children like to feel in control, so giving some control back to them during the situation can help resolve conflicts, promote positive changes and successfully adapt to your divorce.
