Helping children deal with the emotions of divorce

Divorce is a painful process for every member of the family. While it is difficult for adults to cope with the stress of this huge life change, it is often even more difficult for children who may not understand what is happening and why. Parents in North Carolina should take intentional steps to guide their children through the transition of divorce, as well as the days and months to follow.

KidsHealth.org offers several tips to help parents make this process less painful for their children. Above all, children should be reminded of their parents' continued presence in their lives. Even though the family structure is changing, children need to know that they are not losing their parents, and this situation is not their fault.

Another extremely important way to protect the children is to separate them from conflict between the spouses as much as possible. During this emotionally vulnerable time, children need the reassurance that they can continue to rely upon both parents and that their routine will be disrupted as little as possible. They should be made aware of the situation without going into unnecessary detail which could color their opinion of one parent and potentially damage the relationship with that parent.

Children need the freedom to voice their feelings and opinions. However, sometimes children have difficulty communicating their emotions adequately. In these cases, The Huffington Post offers additional advice. Sometimes children alter their behavior during stressful times as a means of coping. If that is the case, offering patience and support is more effective than frustration or punishment. Talking time to talk through how the children feel throughout the process may be an effective means to help them deal with the pain.
