Reviewing information on distracted driving

Motor vehicle accidents take place for diverse reasons, from intoxicated drivers to icy roads and speeding. That said, traffic collisions in Mecklenburg and other parts of North Carolina may also happen due to distracted drivers. When someone takes the eyes off of the road while operating a car, truck or any type of vehicle, they increase the chances of a potentially perilous outcome.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has drawn attention to three main types of distracted driving, which include distractions that take drivers’ mental focus off the road, eyes away from the road or hands away from the steering wheel. Over the course of 2013, 424,000 people suffered injuries in distracted driving accidents and more than 3,150 lost their lives in a traffic accident which involved a driver who was distracted.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,477 people passed away in a motor vehicle accident that was caused by a distracted driver during 2015. There are a wide variety of reasons why drivers become distracted when they should instead focus on the road. For example, a driver may communicate with other people in the vehicle, which reduces their mental focus. Or, they may look away while picking something up from the floor or changing the radio station. Other distractions include changing the radio station, talking on the phone and receiving or sending text messages.

While distracted driving wrecks are preventable, careless behavior will lead to even more in the future. It is essential for victims of these wrecks to firmly stand up for their rights.
