Crashes involving teenage drivers

When it comes to motor vehicle accidents, many factors can affect victims, such as the extent of the damage and the severity of injuries that were sustained in the crash. For younger drivers, traffic collisions can upend their lives in various ways. For example, they may lose the ability to play a sport that they are very talented at or they may have a harder time getting to class each day. For parents, as well as teens, understanding some of the risks and always focusing on prevention is key.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has drawn attention to some of the hazards that can result in a motor vehicle accident for teen drivers, especially the consumption of alcohol. Of the drivers who were between 15 and 20, 26 percent who passed away in a crash in 2014 had a blood alcohol content level of 0.01 or greater. Moreover, motorcycle accidents are also dangerous, claiming the lives of 225 people between the ages of 15 and 20 over the course of 2014.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, traffic accidents are the number one cause of teen fatalities in the United States. In fact, more than 2,300 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 passed away in a traffic accident during 2015.

For teens, families and others who are involved in a collision, these accidents are often very upsetting. From financial problems to physical pain and death, traffic crashes shatter lives. However, many wrecks are avoidable if drivers follow traffic safety laws and avoid dangerous behaviors, such as speeding.
